Our Story

Unlike other operators Tru has never been restricted by national borders.

In the early days our company (which was then known as Truphone) started out in the mobile internet telephony field, developing Nokia, BlackBerry, Apple iPhone and Android apps that are used by hundreds of thousands of users across the globe. 

Our Tru App is still going strong and now even allows you to make internet calls without an internet connection, routing part of the call through a normal mobile network using our unique technology.

Even though our solutions have expanded with our Tru SIM now available to individuals and businesses, our heritage in designing services that help customers avoid inflated roaming and international calling rates is at the core of everything we do.

Truphone Ltd is the company behind Tru. Truphone is privately owned, funded by both venture capital investment and angel investors. Headquartered in London, UK, the company also has offices in the USA, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Spain.

2006

    - (October) Launched the first Tru App into beta

2007

    - (June) Released functionality to allow VoIP calling over 3G

2008

    - (April) Acquired SIM4travel
    - (July) Launched the world's  first VoIP application for the iPhone
    - (October) Launched the BlackBerry application
    - (December) Launched the iPod touch application

2009

    - (January) Launched the Android application

2010

    - (January) The Tru SIM (known then as Truphone Local Anywhere) is launched
    - (April) The Tru App becomes available for the iPad
    - (December) The Tru App becomes available for desktops

2011

    - (July) Launches first app-less recording solution for UK finance sector with Obsidian
