Truphone

Using Truphone on the move

You can now make low cost internet calls with Truphone when you're not connected to the internet.

Truphone Anywhere is available wherever you can use a mobile phone. When you're in your home country and want to make an international call we'll ask if you want to route the call using Truphone Anywhere. If you do, we'll employ some clever VoIP trickery to route as much of your call as possible over the internet at our brilliant low rates.

If your current mobile deal includes bundled, free or low-cost minutes for domestic calls, Truphone Anywhere will probably save you money on international calls. In some instances it'll save you a fortune.

How does Truphone Anywhere work?

Truphone Anywhere might sound very clever, but all you really need to know is that it can save you money on international calls from your home country.

You'll be asked each time you dial an international number whether you want to use Truphone Anywhere (you can turn this question off in the settings once you are comfortable with how it works).

Truphone Anywhere works in two modes: call through and call back, but all the clever behind the scenes stuff happens automatically. Calls made with Truphone Anywhere behave like all other calls - you just dial as normal and wait for the call to connect.

Call through (default mode)

Call through

If you dial an international number, the call is redirected at the handset to a Truphone access number in your country, which connects to our server which in turn automatically completes your call to the international destination.

What you pay for

  • Domestic rate GSM call to Truphone server in your home country. To see the list of countries with a local Truphone server, click here.
(Please note that data connections will be needed for iPhone and BlackBerry)

  • Low cost Truphone call to your international destination. See rates.

In this case you may be using 'free' or low cost bundled minutes for the first leg of the call and Truphone's low international rates for the second leg. This is often much cheaper than the international rates charged by other mobile operators. Please note, Truphone Anywhere calls in Canada, which are not made within the Toronto (416) province, may incur a long-distance call charge from your local operator to connect to the Truphone server.

Call back

Call Back is for advanced Nokia users (you can turn it on in your Truphone settings). It can be useful both at home (if you are on a high cost pay-as-you-go tariff) or when travelling abroad.

Call back

(Be reassured, all this technical wizardry happens behind the scenes. You just dial and wait for the magic to happen!) When you make a call (to an international number or any number when you're roaming abroad) the handset automatically sends an SMS text message to our server (in the UK or USA) requesting the call. It then calls you and also places the onward call.

What you pay for

  • GSM SMS to Truphone server in the UK or USA.
  • Low cost Truphone call from Truphone server back to your phone. See rates.
